Position held: Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI)

Activities
Performed:

This multidisciplinary experiment was
undertaken to study the scope of increasing the cropping intensity and
productivity of land in the area by adopting integrated cultivation of crop
& fish through harvesting rainwater and utilizing natural brackish water
resources.

An area of 2 ha land in the CSSRI, RRS,
Canning town farm was reshaped into following five different land shaping
models.

Economic analysis of Farming System Models
developed through land shaping techniques revealed highest B:C ratio in the
Farm Pond model
, follwed by deep furrow and high
ridge and paddy-cum-fish
. Based on the successful
performance and favourable economics of these options, these models have been
spread to large number of farmers
(over 600) in the
region through NAIP project later on.

Position held: Principal Investigator (PI)

Activities
Performed:

Baseline information was collected. database
on socio-economic condition of farmers are being analysed and economics of
dominating farming systems have been alalysed
.

Impact of improved agro-technologies as implemented on farmers
field was evaluated through performance criteria like change in productivity,
employment, cropping intensity, income, migration and reduced salinity conditions.

Financial analysis indicated that investment
on these land-shaping models is not only profitable but highly attractive
proposition and financially feasible.

Name of the assignment/ project: Impact of Salt tolerant rice varieties of CSSRI on farmers’
economy in costal salt affected areas

Year: 2013-15

Location: West Bengal, India

Client: CSSRI, RRS
Canning Town, West Bengal (funded by ICAR)

Position held: Principal Investigator (PI)

Activities
Performed:

 Study has been
conducted through primary survey
to capture the impact of salt
tolerant rice varieties as developed by ICAR-CSSRI.

Farmers’ adoption behaviour of towards new
crop varieties dependent on several attributes that includes characteristics
of the varieties like yield, grain quality, straw quality, duration etc. as
well as farmers’ own socio-economic conditions like farm situation, water
availability, family income, off-farm & on-farm income, occupation,
taste, preferences etc.

Varietal preference during kharif and rabi
are distinctly different
and needs more variety options for the
farmers, were suggested.
